Can we say that the days of evil are behind us?
Just a few days ago we celebrated the festival of lights, where good triumphs over evil, the festival of Deepavali. All over the city, on the eve of the festival, were monsters.
Hell was set loose on earth and demons ran loose like this land was their own. They were on vehicles and even on water. They were out chasing people, waiting for a chance to turn their happiness to sorrow.
Deepavali is actually supposed to be the festival of lights where good triumphs over evil, but, in recent times instead of concentrating on spreading goodness, we spend two to three weeks creating demons. And then, there is more commotion to see the demons than to destroy them.
In the process of making these huge demons and sending them for competitions, I think we have actually forgotten what these creatures truly symbolize. Deepavali is becoming more about the demons than about the light which we are supposed to be spreading to make the world a better place. It is true that we burn these demons to symbolize good’s triumph over evil, but by burning so many of these symbols are we truly removing evil from the world or adding to it?
Global warming!
Is it something good? By burning the demons we are actually contributing more to this evil rather than working to save our world from it. World over we are now getting more conscious about global warming. It is imperative that we take the initiative to save our world from all the evil around us. We do see the need for keeping the tradition and transferring the mythology to our children. But, do we need a competition? We could start by stopping the custom of competing between demons. This doesn’t mean that we stop the tradition of criminating the “Narkasur” but we should get together as a community and one single demon. A demon is a demon whether big or small. It symbolizes the same thing, evil. So it makes no difference if we burn a big one or small.
Don’t you think it is better to burn a demon that will contribute a little less to the fire than many at each nook and corner and create a fire that will soon engulf the whole world?
