Women's NGO criticises Goa police casino jaunt

Bailancho Saad states that the senior officers of police committed a breach of trust who went partying at the casinos instead of conducting  surveillance of illegal activities of the casinos as was decided at the meeting of IGP with the NGO’s and Goa State Commission for Women.

On Wednesday, 11th Nov, at the monthly meeting of the IGP and Goa State Commission for women and organizations working for women, it was brought to the notice of the IGP and senior officials present, that there has been a spurt of illegal activities related to the casinos. Bailancho Saad  pointed out that a casino management person was booked by the police is a pointer to the fact that prostitution and trafficking linked to casinos is taking place.

ARZ pointed out that trafficking of women has increased and more local women have landed in prostitution as is indicated by the number of rescued local women housed in the State Protective Home.

Goa State Commission for Women members pointed out that many massage parlours have sprung up and advertisements for escorts are appearing on websites and print media.

A strong demand was made for checking and curbing illegal activities of the casino. The IGP assured that he would instruct his officers to maintain surveillance and vigil.

On Thursday, 12th Nov, senior police were seen in the casinos and the first reaction that the police were there as decoys turned to shock and dismay on learning that they actually went to party and were hosted by the casinos.

Bailancho Saad states that the issue is not of legality or illegality of partying but breach of trust and confidence that people have in the police. The kind of entertainment that was provided at the Anjuna police station inauguration showed total disrespect to women.

With the legislators and executive patronizing the casinos, one cannot expect action against illegalities. It is left up to the people to be the custodians of law and prevent the degeneration of society that casinos have set in motion.
