The Union Cabinet decided to set up a National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Goa. The state is one of nine where such institutes will be set up.
Land for the institute will be alloted by the Goa govt, said Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat. He also said 50% seats will be reserved for Goan students.
The institutes will offer courses in engineering and science and will undertake research and development in emerging areas. They are covered under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 to make them institutions of national importance.
The NITs are fully centrally funded and have the status of deemed universities.
