The doctor/ public ratio in Goa has improved over the last two decades. During the year 1987-88, there existed one doctor for every 882 persons in Goa while in the year 2006 there was one doctor for every 586 persons in the state.
The latest figures provided by the department of planning, statistics and evaluation, through a survey conducted in the year 2006 observed that the number of doctors in the private hospitals and clinics has risen from 82 to 123 during the past 20 years while interestingly, the government hospitals saw rise of only one doctor in them, during the same period.
Furthermore, as per the report, the number of beds in private hospitals and clinics shot up from 1,312 to 2,360 during last two decades in comparison with those in government hospitals which rose from 2,371 to 2,841. The report also stated that since 1987-88, six additional health sub-centres have come up in Goa while no additional urban health centres have been provided during this period. The number of community health centres has grown by 2 and the primary health centres have increased by 5.
The report observed that even though the doctor/ public ratio in Goa has improved during the past twenty years, the number of doctors presently available in Goa is not proportional to the number of patients existing in the state.
