Vector-borne diseases show downward trend

PANAJI: June, the first month of monsoon in Goa, this year saw near 50 per cent drop in the cases of malaria, as compared to last year; such cases reduced from 941 in June 2008 to 493 in June this year.

This also includes drop in the cases of malaria of plasmodium falciparum variety from 252 to 108. The National Vector-Borne Diseases Control Programme cell of the directorate of health services informed ‘The Navhind Times’ on Monday that during the month of June 2009, it recorded 15, 6 and nil confirmed cases of dengue, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis, respectively. During the month of June 2009, maximum confirmed cases of dengue – 6 - were recorded at the Corlim health centre, which also had the maximum confirmed cases of chikungunya – 3.
