The swine flu claimed its first victim from Goa when a woman from Canacona succumed to the H1N1 virus.

 Traffic on the National Highway into Karnataka was paralyzed for well over an hour and a half on Friday as members of The South Goa Sand Transporters’ Association blocked the road in protest.

The Canacona Community Health Centre, which had been functioning smoothly till some years back, has now reached a deplorable state due to the lack of basic facilities and medical staff. The centre catering to nearly 60,000-65,000 people has only 50 to 60 beds in working condition.

Angry residents protested over inadequate medical facilities at Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) on Thursday, even as the health officer got himself hospitalized due to chest pains.

According to reports, about 35 residents from Poinguinim and Canacona, including Poinguinim MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, marched to Canacona CHC on Thursday afternoon to put their grievances regarding poor health facilities in CHC to the Director of Health Services Dr Rajananda Dessai.
